Introduction
CBD products are plant-based systems and therefore subject to natural change over time. Stability, shelf life and best-before dates are often used interchangeably, but they describe different concepts. This article provides a clear technical distinction.
What does stability mean technically?
Stability describes a product’s ability to maintain its defined composition within specified limits over a certain period of time. It always depends on matrix, storage conditions and packaging.
- light exposure (UV and visible light)
- oxygen contact
- temperature
- matrix type (e.g. oil, solid form)
Shelf life vs. best-before date (BBD)
Shelf life technically describes the period during which a product remains stable under defined conditions. The best-before date (BBD) is a regulatory label reflecting this period using conservative assumptions.
An exceeded BBD does not automatically mean that a product is unusable; it simply indicates that the manufacturer no longer guarantees stability beyond that point.
Impact of storage conditions
Storage conditions significantly influence stability. Especially in oil-based or complex matrices, degradation processes may accelerate or slow down depending on environmental factors.
- consistent, moderate temperatures
- protection from light
- minimized oxygen exposure
A deeper, systematic discussion of stability-related processes is available in Stability of Botanical Extracts.
Degradation processes & natural change
Loss of stability usually occurs gradually. Oxidation, isomerization or matrix-related changes may be analytically measurable without allowing direct functional conclusions.
Such changes are normal in plant-based products and do not necessarily indicate a quality defect, but reflect the nature of biological raw material systems.
Product context and interpretation
Stability must always be interpreted in relation to product form and composition. Oils, solid forms and complex systems show different stability profiles.
